With a VISION to position Abu Dhabi as a center of excellence and innovation in Healthcare. Department of Health, Abu Dhabi, announces TIP Healthcare Awards through the TIP (Technology Innovation Pioneers) Platform initiated by the Ministry of Economy and Department of Economic Development Abu Dhabi.
The TIP Healthcare Awards objective is to establish a sustainable world-class platform to encourage quality and competitive, healthcare innovation, on a global scale; by attracting innovators and entrepreneurs from all over the world and to stimulate innovation across a wide healthcare spectrum.
The Awards, hosted under TIP (Technology Innovation Pioneer) movement, is a vehicle which will undoubtedly boost innovation across industries, help spark creativity in science and technology amongst generations, and contribute to our vision of a “Healthier Abu Dhabi”.
The Department of Health Mission is; Bringing together global leaders and entrepreneurs in healthcare’s innovation, technology and research to shape the future of the world’s health practice. It will activate a research network across the nation, that will position Abu Dhabi as a world-class hub for innovation in healthcare and life science, backed with attracting the most talented experts from all over the world.

To be eligible for the TIP Healthcare Awards, you have to complete the TIP Overview Course and one of the following three courses: Patent & Intellectual Property Course, Proof of Concept Course or Start-up your Business Course.
TIP Healthcare Awards are globally open for candidates with innovative ideas that can be basic or developed and tested, and are interested in contributing to the Healthcare listed throughout TIP Healthcare Awards. We are looking for driven resourceful healthcare and health-tech innovators who are interested in registering their projects in Abu Dhabi and UAE under: patent, proof of concept or start-up. Below you can find the details about eligibility for the 3 options:
Global participants with a healthcare and health-tech innovative idea that they would like to protect in Abu Dhabi & UAE. The idea should fulfill the following criteria:
Technology Based.
It has to be Inventive.
It has to be a novel.
It has to be healthcare and health-tech related.
It has not been disclosed to the public.
Subject Matters which aren’t patentable are: Plant varieties, animal species, biological methods of producing plants and animals Diagnostic methods, treatments and surgical operations needed for humans and animals Scientific and mathematical principles discoveries and methods Invention that may lead to violation of the public order or morals. Guides, rules or methods followed to conduct business or perform mental activities or play games Applications that are not augmented applications
Any global participant, commercial organisation, academic institution and government organisation with a healthcare and health-tech innovative idea to implement in Abu Dhabi & UAE: They need to provide evidence of:
ownership of the healthcare & health-tech project
prototype in Technology Readiness Level (TRL) stage of 5 or higher is a plus
the right to commercialise the project
the right to disclose information in respect of the project.
Participant with ideas that are not patentable may apply for a proof concept. These ideas may include:
Lack of novelty
Obviousness
Lack of industrial applicability
Cannot be patented
You should also proceed with a proof of concept if you already have a patent and want to turn your project on paper into a tangible, usable device, concept or technology.
The start-up within Abu Dhabi & UAE should fulfill the following criteria:
An innovative healthcare & health-tech idea
A technology based company
Preferably established in the market between 1-2 years
Has obtained a patent or run a POC through Takamul Program

Q: IS THERE AN APPLICATION FEE? HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO APPLY?
No, there is no fee to apply, and it only takes approximately 40-45 minutes to complete the application.
Q: IS IT SAFE TO DISCLOSE SENSITIVE INFORMATION?
Yes, all information disclosed will be treated as confidential and will be an integral part of the patent registration process within Takamul program in the department of economic development – Abu Dhabi the leading IP support program since 2011
Q: WHEN DO APPLICATIONS OPEN?
Official applications will open on the end of December 2017, with a final deadline of 23rd of March 2018.
Q: WHY SHOULD I PARTICIPATE?
TIP Healthcare Awards provide participants with customized and efficient learning opportunities. Most competitions simply judge your concept without helping you learn from the experience. The participants in TIP Healthcare Awards receive feedback not only directly related to patents, proof of concepts and startup registrations, but an opportunity to get formally introduced to a broad network of healthcare professionals and to establish themselves in an emerging TIP movement.
Q: DO I NEED AN ESTABLISHED BUSINESS TO COMPETE?
No, you can be in the ideation or operation phase.
Q: IS TIP Healthcare Awards ONLY OPEN TO CERTAIN INDUSTRIES OR IDEAS?
All ideas will be consider as long as they contribute to the Non-Communicable diseases listed in the TIP Healthcare Awards challenges:
Cardiovascular disease prevention and management
Occupational and environmental health
Mother, infant and school health
Cancer control
Chronic conditions including Asthma
Oral health
Diabetes
Other healthcare related areas
Q: IS THERE A MINIMUM OR MAXIMUM NUMBER OF TEAM MEMBERS REQUIRED?
No, you can compete individually or as part of a team with as many members as necessary.
Q: HOW WILL I KNOW IF I MADE IT TO THE NEXT STEP? WILL I BE NOTIFIED IF I DO NOT ADVANCE?
All submissions receive notifications of their outcome. The chosen participants to proceed to the next step receive specific instructions to proceed.
Q: DOES THE COMPETITION TAKE INTO ACCOUNT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS?
The scope of the challenge doesn’t include an R&D track, however if R&D has already been conducted and the innovation is at the patent, proof of concept or startup stage – then you are welcome to participate in any of the relevant tracks.
Q: IS IT POSSIBLE TO SUBMIT MORE THAN ONE PATENT, POC OR START-UP APPLICATION?
Registrants can submit more than one Patent, POC or Start-Up application by creating different accounts with different emails, but same personal information, for each application.
